Part 1: Overview of the 2026 Formula 1 Regulations
Overview of the 2026 regulations
The 2026 season is the biggest rules reset in a decade. Formula 1 and the FIA are introducing new power-unit regulations, simplified aerodynamics and sustainability changes to promote closer racing and attract new manufacturers. The headline features include:
·
Power-unit changes - The 1.6-litre V6 turbo internal-combustion engine is retained but the MGU-H (which harvested exhaust-gas energy) is removed. The electric side becomes far more significant; around 50 % of total output will come from electrical power, up from roughly 20 % previously. The MGU-K will be nearly three times more powerful (350 kW versus 120 kW) and drivers will have more sophisticated boost and recharge modes to manage energy strategically. Sustainable fuels derived from carbon-capture and waste feedstocks will also be mandatory. These changes are designed to make the power units more road-relevant and attract new manufacturers (Formula 1 2024d; Formula 1 2024f).

Image Guide - MGU-H (Removed): Motor Generator Unit - Heat (MGU-H). This is a significant change, as the component is being dropped to simplify the power unit and reduce costs.
MGU-K (350kW) - 3x More Powerful: The image accurately states that the Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic (MGU-K) will have an output of 350kW, which is an approximately threefold increase from the previous 120kW.
1.6-Litre V6 Turbocharged: The image correctly identifies that the 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 internal combustion engine will be retained as the core of the power unit.
50% Electrical Power / 50% Internal Combustion: The split circle graph accurately represents a primary goal of the new regulations: to achieve a roughly equal split in power output between the internal combustion engine and the electrical system.
Active aerodynamics - Both the front and rear wings now incorporate movable elements that open for reduced drag on straights and close to produce downforce in corners. In Corner Mode the wing slats are closed; in Straight Mode they open to reduce drag. Drivers can also activate an Overtake Mode when within one second of the car ahead, releasing extra electrical energy and aerodynamic relief. This new system replaces the limited-use DRS and is explained in the FIA glossary (Formula 1 2024b; Formula 1 2024e).

Chassis and floor - Ground-effect tunnels are removed; the cars have flatter floors and a larger diffuser. The front wing is simplified and the "eyebrow" winglets above the front wheels disappear. The wheelbase and width are shortened and the cars are lighter, with a minimum weight reduction of roughly 30 kg. The nose incorporates a two-stage crash structure for improved safety (Formula 1 2024a; Formula 1 2024e).

Procedural changes - With the MGU-H gone, drivers must build turbo boost themselves at race starts. Some teams have lobbied for a revised start procedure to allow more time to spool up the turbo and avoid dangerously slow getaways (ESPN 2026). How the FIA resolves this will influence start-line competitiveness.

Turbo boost The increased air pressure delivered to the engine by the turbocharger, which increases power.(ESPN 2026)
Spool up The process of the turbocharger increasing its rotational speed to provide boost. Without the MGU-H, this process is slower.(ESPN 2026)
Revised start procedure A proposed change to the race start rules that would allow drivers more time to build turbo boost before the race begins.(ESPN 2026)
These sweeping changes mean that teams are designing completely new cars while simultaneously managing their 2025 campaigns. The next sections review how each team's preparations stand (as of mid-February 2026) and which grey areas or loopholes appear to be exploited.
Continued in Part 2, where we examine each team’s preparations and the loopholes they may be exploiting under the new 2026 regulations. Subscribe here for the latest Posts
