Lap‑time comparison

The table below summarises how each team fared against Mercedes during the second Bahrain test. Mercedes set the fastest lap of 1 m 33.669 s, and other teams’ best efforts are expressed as the time difference relative to that benchmark. These figures are indicative rather than definitive; they come from testing sessions with varying fuel loads, tyre compounds and ambient conditions. Nevertheless, they illustrate the early pecking order and the sizeable gaps the midfield and tail‑end teams must close.

Notes

Mercedes

0.000

Set the benchmark time (Andrea Kimi Antonelli).

Ferrari

+0.540

Competitive second place (Lewis Hamilton).

McLaren

+0.880

Solid performance but behind Mercedes and Ferrari.

Red Bull Racing

+1.129

Struggled on day 1 with dusty track.

Haas

+1.725

A surprise; rookie Oliver Bearman impressed.

Alpine

+2.137

Working on reliability and adaptation.

Audi

+2.622

Encouraging first test with new power unit.

Williams

+2.996

Completed 422 laps, focusing on mileage.

Racing Bulls

+3.139

Off the pace but gathering data.

Cadillac

+3.155

New team learning steadily.

Aston Martin

+4.496

Significant gap; car still underdeveloped.

The bar chart below visualises these differences. The bars lengthen as we move down the order, highlighting how Mercedes and Ferrari have established an early buffer over the rest.

Aston Martin’s gap of 4.496 s underscores the scale of its challenge. Values are taken from the Fox Sports report and should be interpreted cautiously because testing conditions vary (Lamonato 2026).

Key questions for teams

·             Mercedes & Red Bull – Will the FIA amend the rules to measure compression ratio with the engine hot, and if so, how much performance will Mercedes and Red Bull lose? How are they balancing energy deployment within the new boost/recharge system? Can Mercedes’ engine advantage be neutralised (Motorsport.com 2025; Harden 2026)?

·             Ferrari – Will the planned upgrade package and small‑turbo philosophy close the gap to Mercedes? How will the team cope with potential start‑procedure changes that could nullify their turbo‑lag advantage (ESPN 2026)?

·             McLaren – Can the team maximise the Mercedes power unit and active aerodynamics to defend its titles? How effectively will drivers manage the new boost modes during races (Motorsport.com 2025b)?

·             Audi – Will Audi’s innovative vertical radiator inlet and sidepod design prove the first of many radical interpretations? Can their in‑house power unit match the established manufacturers? How quickly can the new team gel operationally (Formula 1 2024g; Formula 1 2024h)?

·             Aston Martin – Can Adrian Newey’s design deliver once reliability improves? Will the team catch up on mileage and solve engine integration issues? Does Newey have any aerodynamic tricks that could surprise the field later in the season (Formula 1 2024i; ESPN 2026)?

·             Cadillac – How steep will the learning curve be for the new American team? Will its conservative approach pay off in reliability even if outright speed is lacking (Lamonato 2026)?

·             Midfield teams – Can Haas, Alpine, Racing Bulls and Williams find clever interpretations in areas like floor geometry or cooling packaging? Or will resources limit their ability to chase loopholes (Lamonato 2026)?

Conclusion

New entrants Audi and Cadillac have shown encouraging progress, while Aston Martin must convert Adrian Newey’s radical ideas into performance and reliability (Formula 1 2024i; ESPN 2026).

As the start of the season approaches, how the FIA and teams address loopholes and interpret ambiguous rules will be pivotal in determining who gains the early advantage in Formula 1’s new era.
